Day 9 Thurs July 8th: Albuquerque, NM to Sedona, AZ

We wake our sleepy eyes and head toward our destination of Sedona, AZ. Taking the historic Route 66 (no, we didn’t get any kicks) through Navajo country, we make our way to the lovely state of Arizona. We stop on the way at the Petrified Forest/Painted Desert National Park for a mid-day, desert, down the steep canyon hike. Matt made me climb all the way down, but I was glad in the end as I probably lost a pound or ten in sweat and got to see the fossilized trees from 225 million years ago. We chug a couple gallons of water and keep on our way to Sedona, stopping for lunch in the cool town of Flagstaff. I was ready for a “granola” town like Flagstaff after being in “beef and potato” land for what seems like forever. The drive south to Sedona on the Oak Creek Canyon scenic Highway 89 is definitely one of the most beautiful drives yet. The two lane road curves through mountains, trees, and red rock. If I were not driving, I would put my hands over my head and ride it rollercoaster style like Matt did. We’ve officially put Flagstaff/Sedona on the list of future places to live. Things took a slight downturn as we realized that it was getting dark and all the campgrounds in this beautiful area were full. We made our way to our first KOA campground, which for those who don’t know, is like the Hilton of campgrounds. We kind of felt like we were cheating, but we really enjoyed the showers and wireless internet in our tent. Better get some sleep for exploring Sedona in the morning.

  1. You will love Sedona! The first time I saw it I said it was the only place I would just pack up and move to. The river rocks are red and blue and the scenery is breath taking. Take your time and take it all in.. love you
