Even getting there by getting there at 9am, most of the Ranger-Guided tours were sold out. We did manage to get on one of the tours. We took the natural entrance into the cavern; the elevator is for pussies (sorry for the profanity, but it is). We wound our way down thru the darkness, minus the smell of guano at the entrance; the caverns have this clean smell/taste to the air. There are no words to describe this natural wonder. It’s like trying to describe color (impossible). The best way to tour these caverns is to explore them yourself and read the information articles along the way. The rangers just echo what’s on these lighted panels. Using the bathroom 750 ft underground is quite an experience in itself (No, they had a restroom). After a nap, we returned to the caverns for the bat’s nightly exodus from the cave. Its much like a plume of smoke leaving the cave. They fly in a cyclone pattern, bringing distinct stink of guano with them, out of the cave.
Off to Albuquerque/Cibola National Forest.
